Police: Teen arrested in 2014 slaying of New York rabbi

MIAMI (AP) — Police have charged a 15-year-old student in the slaying of a New York rabbi who was on his way to temple in Miami.

Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Jennifer Capote said Wednesday that homicide detectives had arrested Deandre Charles in connection with the death of 60-year-old Rabbi Joseph Raksin.

Raksin was fatally shot Aug. 9, 2014, as he walked to a temple in Miami, where he had been visiting family. At the time, authorities said the slaying appeared to have been a robbery gone bad, but had not ruled out a hate crime. But authorities called it a crime of opportunity Wednesday.

The Miami Herald (http://tinyurl.com/npphek9) reports DNA and eyewitness testimony helped identity Charles.

A grand jury indicted him on first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery.
