Bruins take 45 shots in 5-2 win over Red Wings
BOSTON (AP) — Carl Soderberg had a goal and two assists, and the Boston Bruins had a season-high 45 shots in a 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night.
Reilly Smith, Gregory Campbell and Seth Griffin also scored for the Bruins, who were without two of their top forwards. Leading scorer Patrice Bergeron (7 goals, 20 assists) and Milan Lucic sat with undisclosed injuries, the first game either has missed this season.
The Bruins, who have dealt with a string of injuries through the first three months of the season, played one of their strongest games — short-handed or at full-strength.
AP source: Michigan lands Harbaugh as new coach
UNDATED (AP) — Former San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh has agreed to become the new coach at Michigan, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions.
A deal has been signed, according to the person who spoke Monday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there was no announcement from the school or Harbaugh.
Harbaugh didn’t immediately respond to calls or text messages. Multiple reports say the school will announce Tuesday that the former Michigan quarterback is replacing the fired Brady Hoke.
The 51-year-old Harbaugh coached the 49ers to three straight NFC championship games. After the 49ers slipped to 8-8 this season and missed the playoffs, he parted ways with the team in what both sides called a mutual decision.
Lions DT Suh suspended for playoff game
NEW YORK (AP) — Detroit defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has been suspended for this Sunday’s wild-card playoff game against Dallas for a violation of safety-related playing rules against Green Bay in the season finale.
The league announced Monday that Suh was suspended for stepping on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ left leg twice, once with each foot. Suh also applied pressure and pushed off Rodgers’ unprotected leg with his left foot, violating unnecessary roughness rules, the league said in a statement.
Suh, who will be reinstated next Monday, can appeal the suspension within three days. He can ask for an expedited appeal, which would be heard by either Derrick Brooks or Ted Cottrell, hearing officers employed by the NFL and the players’ union.
COTTON BOWL-MICHIGAN ST DEFENSE
Spartans D big challenge in Narduzzi’s finale
DALLAS (AP) — Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi is in for quite a curtain call.
The Spartans, a top-10 defense for the fourth season in a row, play high-powered Baylor at the Cotton Bowl in Narduzzi’s final game with them before he takes over as Pittsburgh’s head coach.
Even after taking his new job last week, at the FBS school about an hour from where he grew up, Narduzzi wanted to finish this season with the Spartans (10-2). He says he didn’t want to let down his defense, not after eight years with the Spartans.
