Baltimore County police name man accused in hatchet attack

MIDDLE RIVER, Md. (AP) — Baltimore County police have identified a man who they say attacked a couple with a hatchet, wounded himself and then was shot by police as he lunged for a knife.

Police said in a news release that 22-year-old Travis Jay Hunt was hospitalized in critical but stable condition Monday night.

He will be charged with attempted murder, assault and armed robbery in connection with the Saturday night attack at a home in Middle River.

Authorities say a female officer who was investigating the attack that night found Hunt in a home about a mile away. Police say Hunt cut himself in the neck with a knife, dropped it and then lunged for it, prompting the officer to shoot him.

Police have not released the race of the suspect or the officer.
