Today was the first day high school football teams could hit the practice field, .meaning it’s the day we start our annual 6 Sports Prep Two-A-Days.
We’re going to 20 schools over the next 2 weeks and at some schools practice actually started early this morning:
It was midnight madness at Okemos High School, first time the Chieftains have done this but they were ready for some football just after midnight because that’s when players were allowed to hit the field for the first time.
Other area schools have done this but Okemos to this point had not.
Jack Wallace, entering his 6th season at Okemos and his 47th season in coaching, his team opens August 24th against Mason.
Wallace is an old school coach, so some around Okemos were surprised he went for all this pomp and circumstance on day one:
Reporter: Did they sell you on this a little?
Wallace: “At first I said no. Last year they wanted to do it and I said no I don’t want to and then they kind of convinced me that we could just have fun. Imagine that—come out here and have fun? Ha ha ha ha ha ha.”
The players enjoyed the night.
Reporter: What’s this like to practice at midnight?
Player: “ It’s something special. Coach never did anything like it, we’ve never done anything
like it, it’s just fun to be out here under the lights and everything.”
Reporter: And they get tomorrow off right?
Wallace: “ No, they.. ha ha ha ha ha…no the real stuff starts tomorrow.”
