Salvation Army bell ringers “ring in” holiday spirit

OKEMOS, Mich. (WLNS) – For up to eight hours a day, DeAnthony Jones braves the cold, wintery weather…

“The presence of the Lord is here,” Jones sang.

…to give back to those in need for the holiday season.

“I just love doing it and it just brings joy to my heart to bring joy to people,” said Jones, Salvation Army Bell Ringer.

Jones has been doing this for the last 2 years. Bell in hand, he adds even more joy by dancing and singing, while ringing.

All in an effort to collect donations for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign.

“It helps us raise money for people that needs it…if I’m helping a little bit and it’s around the Christmas time and when people need to be cheerful so it’s good,” Jones stated.

Jones says he wears his heart on his sleeve…

“Thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus,” he whispered.

…and his charisma is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face.

He isn’t the only one ringing in the holiday spirit though…

“Happy holidays, Merry christmas!” Lansing Local Kevin Roberts yelled.

Robert says being a bell ringer for the past three years means more than just collecting money.

“It makes me happy I mean just to see the smiles on the kid’s faces you know God put me here to do this,” Roberts added.

Both Roberts and Jones say if they can bring peace, joy and comfort to people’s lives that is the most rewarding gift of all.

“It helps me, help others,” Jones said.

“It just puts a lot inside of me you know to be out here and do what I’m doing,” Roberts stated.
