Pets in the cold: if you see something, say something

MASON, MI (WLNS) – While 6 News wants to help keep you and your family safe during the winter time, we also want to remind you not to forget about your pets.

There’s no question, it’s cold outside, and if it’s too cold for you it’s too cold for your dog.

Yes, your dog or cat has a fur coat but in temps we’re seeing now if you’re cold standing outside in this weather your pet is, too and you shouldn’t leave them outside for a long period of time. If you do, you could face serious consequences.

“We enforce animal cruelty laws and under Michigan laws and the county ordinance, dogs and cats have to have appropriate food, water, shelter, exercise and veterinary care,” John Dinon, Director of Ingham County Animal Control said. “So if an animal is outdoors without adequate shelter or if their outdoors and their water is frozen for long periods of time. They’re violating the animal cruelty law and we will investigate.”

If you notice a dog or cat owner that’s violating the law, just like anything else if you see something, say something.

“Absolutely give us a call Ingham County Animal Control (517) 676-8370 and we will investigate every report of animal cruelty we get. You can also email us at reportanimalcruelty@ingham.org and either way you contact us, we will investigate.

There are also certain things Ingham County Animal Control officers keep an eye out for.

“What we generally look for with outdoor dogs is that they have a well-insulated dog house that’s appropriately sized so that they can get in there comfortably but it’s not so big that their body heat cant warm the shelter up,” Dinon said. “In this type of weather it can be a real problem so we want to educate people.

Unfortunately, the animal shelter isn’t open 24-7, but Dinon said in the event of an emergency situation after-hours call 9-1-1.
