WATCH: Memorial bicycle ride for fallen Ingham County deputy

STOCKBRIDGE, Mich (WLNS) – People are remembering Ingham County deputy Grant Whitaker today.

Deputy Whitaker died in the line of duty while chasing a suspect near Stockbridge two years ago today.

A memorial bike ride was held in his honor there this afternoon and 6 News videojournalist Grant Gottschalk brings us the story.

“Today our Capital Area Police Unity Team is riding in honor of Grant Whitaker, it was 2 years ago today that he died in the line of duty,” Bob McElmurray, Ingham County Sheriff’s deputy.

“He was a very conscientious, determined young man, he was a local man of the area and he certainly has been missed,” Darrel Franzel, Head Chaplain for Ingham County Sheriff’s Office. “You’ve got a group of guys here you know that respect, honor, the whole police profession and we are riding so we don’t forget about those that died doing this. The holidays are a tough time for people, especially when there is death in the family during that time because you know when the holidays roll around its a constant reminder of that lost loved one. It’s sad, you know it’s disturbing, but you know this is one way we can remember him and pay our respects. We need to remember that we are all in this together. The big thing today is that it’s all about Grant. We are riding for Grant, he was our brother.”
