Safety For You: Holiday light safety and savings

JACKSON, Mich (WLNS) – The holiday season has arrived and with the spirit of giving comes the spirit of decorating.

Consumers Energy says there is a way you can keep your home festive without spending a lot of money on electricity bills.

The utility says it will only cost eight-cents per “four-hour” night for 300-icicle lights and five-cents for 200 miniature lights.

The company estimates it will cost about $3.90 to decorate the inside and outside of your home per month.

And although the lights may not cost you a lot of money they can be a flammable.

According to the National Fire Protection Association between 2009 and 2013 fire departments responded to over 1,000 home structure fires in the United States due to holiday decorations and Christmas trees.

Consumers Energy spokesman Terry Dedoes says it’s important to do a safety check before using lights for decoration. “Before you put them on the tree you want to inspect the wires. Make sure they’re not frayed.”
