Local businesses react to meth lab bust in downtown Lansing

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – A shocking scene unfolded in downtown Lansing Tuesday as police discovered a meth lab on the 400 block of South Washington Square directly above The Barbarette’s Barber Shop.

“Anytime you’re dealing with a suspected meth lab and operation, it’s a very hazardous situation,” said Robert Merritt, Lansing Police Department Public Information Director.

The location of the bust forced local businesses including Barbarettes to shut down temporarily.

And while it is back open today, Co-owner Ruthann Campos says she’s worried about lasting damage.

“What is this aftermath that we are going to have to deal with as businesses?” Campos stated.

Campos says she thought something suspicious was happening above her barber shop and reported it to the police.

“We saw all the activity of the people in and out, being inside you hear everything that happens outside, upstairs, the smells,” Campos said.

But John Addis, the owner of “Adventures in New Media” next door says he’s stunned to hear a meth lab was operating downtown with so many people around.

“We were certainly all shocked to have that kind of adventure in front of our place yeah…not a good look for the city,” said Addis.

And though the lab has been cleaned up now, both Campos and Addis fear this could keep customers away…

“As soon as somebody see’s our business name, they see that word they assume it’s all combined…we’re just renters, we don’t own the building, we don’t occupy the apartments upstairs or have anything to do with anybody other than who is in our section of the building,” said Campos.

Police have not made any arrests tonight but do say they have a person of interest in this case.
