MASON, Mich (WLNS) – The telephone scammers are back working an old fraud in Ingham County.

Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth is warning people that calls are being made from someone representing themselves as from the Sheriff’s Office.

The caller says that the person receiving the call has missed jury duty and needs to send money immediately to avoid being arrested or having a warrant issued.

Some of the callers claim that they will accept credit cards, Western Union or Green Dot payments.

Sheriff Wriggelsworth reminds people that his office will never call people who have warrants for their arrest and will not request money to avoid arrest.

Never send money who calls you unless you know exactly who that person or you have accounts with them.

Phone scammers can disguise their phone numbers and identity by using phone apps.

If you receive one of these call Sheriff Wriggelsworth recommends that you do one thing: Hang up the phone.
