UPDATE: I-96 fatal crash victim identified

UPDATE 3:00 p.m. – The Eaton County Sheriff has released the name of the person killed in a head-on, rollover crash this morning on eastbound I-96 south of St. Joe Highway in Delta Township.

27-year-old Carl Langham of Holt was a passenger in a westbound SUV that lost control, rolled over and crossed the median into the path of an eastbound SUV just before 7:30 a.m.

The drivers of both of the SUVs were taken to a local hospital for treatment of, what the Sheriff’s Office said, are non-life threatening injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.

UPDATE 1:35 p.m. – I-96 in both directions has reopened.

UPDATE 8:58 a.m. – One person has died in a crash on I-96 at the junction of I-496 on Lansing’s west side.

According to Eaton County Sheriff’s Office investigators a westbound SUV lost control on I-96 between W. St. Joseph Highway and I-496, crossed the median, rolled and hit another SUV that was eastbound.

The passenger in the westbound SUV died of injuries and the drivers of the two SUVs were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Traffic on eastbound I-96 is being routed to eastbound I-496 and will be closed until early afternoon while investigators continue their work.

Westbound I-96 has only one lane open.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until all lanes are reopened.

UPDATE (8:45am): We’re told one west-bound lane is open, but it’s still very slow going.

 

A bad traffic accident has forced officials to close Interstate 96 at the junction with Interstate 496 on Lansing’s west side.

A 6 News photographer sent in a picture of at least one car that flipped over.

Stay away from the area if possible and stay tuned for updates.
