(WLNS) – Last Saturday, the Pewamo-Westphalia Pirates overcame a late deficit to defeat Traverse City Saint Francis 20-14, and advanced to their third straight state semifinal appearance.
“It was a game that I think overall the length of the game wasn’t that long but it felt like an eternity” said 6th year Pirates coach Jeremy Miller. “Especially that fourth quarter was going by so slow… It was kind of the first time anybody I think could really take a breath and take it easy.”
While the Pirates were down for a good amount of the second half, this seasoned playoff team ground out a win, and now faces Ubly in the semifinal.
“Defensively we know what to expect but like you said we’ve never played them before and I hadn’t even heard of them until this year even. So I mean going into it with some questions but we’ll be watching film, figure it out.” Said Pirates senior running back Jared Smith.
The Pirates focus this week is squarely on Ubly, but one motivating factor for the team all year was the fact that it lost to Ishpeming last year in the state final at Ford Field.
“I think for the seniors certainly it has. I think they’ve played off of that sense of being so close and that sense of having it within our grasp.” Commented Miller on the 22-16 loss last November.
“The biggest driving force was that loss and that’s been our goal all season to get back there and I mean we’re close. We got one more game. Taking it a game at a time but obviously if we can get back there that would be amazing and finish with the win this year.” added Smith.
Congratulations to the Pewamo-Westphalia Pirates, our 6 Sports Team of the Week.
