Police rescue man from river after car plunges into waterway

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – Police officers have pulled a 24-year-old man from a southern Michigan river after his vehicle crashed through a fence and plunged into the waterway.

WOOD-TV and the Battle Creek Enquirer report that the vehicle went into the Kalamazoo River in Battle Creek shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday.

The driver was out of the vehicle and floating down the river when officers arrived. He told officers that he couldn’t swim.

An officer went into the river and rescued the man, who was taken to an area hospital and faces drunken driving charges.

The crash is under investigation.
