Michigan state legislature introduces legislation to change state flag

LANSING, Mich. – A State senator has introduced legislation that would, if passed, would result in a new state flag for Michigan.

The current flag design was adopted in 1911.  It features the Great Seal of Michigan on both sides, which itself was designed by early Michigan statesman Lewis Cass in 1835.

The bill would create a Flag Commission to accept design ideas from citizens of Michigan with the hope of choosing a new flag by 2019.

The Commission would accept submissions from Jan. 26, 2018, to July 26, 2018, and a new design would take affect January 1, 2019.
