UPDATE 2:00 p.m. – A 25-year-old male is in custody in connection with the death of a 5-year-old child and arson fire last night in Holt. Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth said the victim died of trauma. The suspect was known to the victim and Sheriff Wriggelsworth said the suspect had a relationship with the victim’s mother. Wriggelsworth said there had been “acrimony” between the suspect and the mother on the day of the homicide.
The sheriff said charges of open murder and arson are being sought from Ingham County Prosecutor Gretchen Whitmer.

UPDATE 11:30 a.m. – This morning Holt public schools superintendent David Hornak sent out a letter to parents in the district saying a “crisis team” is ready to help students and staff with the loss and that he’ll be creating a “Gofundme” account once the girl’s name is released.

ORIGINAL STORY: (WLNS) –Flames ignited at the Old Orchard Apartment Complex , at 4330 Keller Road, around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
Just before 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Delhi Township Fire Officials confirmed that firefighters recovered the body of a 6-year-old girl after the fire was put out.
We’re told investigators are looking into the incident as an arson and homicide, and that a person of interest is in custody at this time.
The child’s name has not been released to the public.
6 News as also learned that no one will be allowed back into the apartment building until later today.
