JACKSON CO., Mich (WLNS) – After a number of delays and postponements the trial of a former Jackson High School teacher has begun.
Jury selection began today in Jackson County Circuit Court where 32-year-old Jonathan Hastings is accused of inappropriately texting a student.
Hastings was originally charged in May 2015 after a police investigation that reportedly showed Hastings sent inappropriate messages to a student.
Hastings resigned from his position with the school a week before the charges were filed.
He is charged with using a computer to commit a crime and promoting or distributing child sexually abusive activity.
Hastings’ defense attorney has argued that some text message evidence should be thrown out because of how it was handled while in police hands.
Prosecutors withdrew the evidence in question but other text messages were permitted.
The trial is expected to last three days.
