UPDATE: Resignation offered in wake of Ingham Co. Sheriff’s Office evidence destruction

(WLNS) – An update now on a story that we’ve been following for the past week.

Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth tells 6 News tonight that Major Joel Maatman has offered up his resignation from the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Wriggelsworth has not acted on Major Maatman’s request to resign and the sheriff tells us that Maatman will be back at work tomorrow.

Major Maatman is a 41-year law enforcement veteran and is in charge of field and staff services at the sheriff’s office.

Last week the sheriff’s office brought to light a sewage leak dating back to 2012 that destroyed an unknown amount of evidence including things such as money, guns, drugs and driver’s licenses.

The evidence room is overseen by Major Joel Maatman.
