UPDATE: MSP asked to investigate evidence loss detailed by Ingham Co. Sheriff’s Office

LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – 6 News has learned tonight that Ingham County Prosecutor Gretchen Whitmer has asked the Michigan State Police to conduct an independent audit of all the evidence kept at the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office.

This request is a result of the admission earlier this week by Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth that evidence had been destroyed after a water main break in the evidence room in the year 2012.

That evidence includes things such as drugs, money and drivers licenses, among other things.

Prosecuctor Whitmer learned of the situation on Wednesday and asked MSP’s help today.

Officials with Michigan State Police tell 6 News they’re reviewing Prosecutor Whitmer’s request.
