Two local schools are being honored as among the best in the country.
The Michigan Department of Education says the Okemos Public Montessori at Central and the Vera Ralya Elementary School in Haslett are among 13 schools across the state being honored as 2016 National Blue Ribbon Schools.
According to the state, the schools are judged on three categories:
- Performance of all students and each of the school’s subgroups on state assessments
- Attendance for elementary and middle schools
- Graduation rate in high schools
The state’s top educator says he’s thrilled with the awards.
“These 13 schools have worked hard to create learning environments that engage and encourage all students to achieve,” said State Superintendent Brian Whiston in a press release. “Their commitment and practices can serve as models for other schools to learn from and follow.”
Whiston says he wants other schools across the state to learn from the Blue Ribbon winners.
