EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – With thousands of people coming into town for MSU’s home games, local businesses see a spike in sales.
In fact, a few local shops and restaurants say business nearly tripled in sales today.
The bars were packed full and Spartan fans were sporting green and white as they watched the Michigan State Spartans take the field.
“We’ve been full of Spartan fans and Wisconsin fans since 9 a.m….they were ready, lined up and ready to go early,” said Nolan Ruffing.
Ruffing is the General Manager of the popular bar and grill “The Riv” and he says thousands of people have come in and out of the restaurant today nearly quadrupling sales.
“You can probably say it’s you know four or five times the normal Saturday,” Ruffing stated.
He says MSU home games really help boost business.
“They’re big days for us, they’re big days for East Lansing so yeah they’re important for business,” Ruffing said.
But “The Riv” isn’t the only local stop that looks forward to the football frenzy.
“The clothing is the big item today,” said Assistant Manager Mike Wylie of the “Student Book Store.”
From hoodies, to hats, to even green and white foam fingers the “Student Book Store” has merchandise flying off the shelves.
“We’ve started right out the get-go at 9:00 this morning,” Wylie stated.
Wylie says he prepares several days before an MSU home game because of the massive influx of people.
“We start early in the week, we start pulling particular sections of clothing to make sure they’re filled up,” Wylie said.
But ultimately, there’s one thing both these businesses have in common…Spartan pride.
“To see everybody out in the green and white you know everybody you know is here to have a good time,” said Ruffing.
