GM unveils new compact Chevy SUV in super-competitive market

DETROIT (AP) – General Motors is hoping that a revamped Chevrolet Equinox compact SUV due out next year will reverse its declining sales in the hottest part of the U.S. market.

Its main competitors, the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue and Ford Escape, all have seen sales increases through August. But Equinox sales are down almost 18 percent. The SUV hasn’t been totally revamped since 2010, while most competitors are newer.

The sculpted new Equinox is 400 pounds lighter than the outgoing model and it’s shorter and lower. Gone are the old V6 and four-cylinder engines, replaced by two turbocharged fours and a four-cylinder turbo diesel.

The new SUV was unveiled Thursday night in Chicago. It goes on sale early next year. Price wasn’t announced.
