LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – More than 3,000 people in the United States have been diagnosed with the Zika Virus including 52 people here in Michigan.

That’s according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and while most of those cases are from people traveling outside of the U.S.
more than 40 cases have been confirmed because of local mosquitoes in Florida.

For this reason health officials have been pushing for Congress to step-up to the plate and increase funding for the fight.

State Senator Steven Beida is sponsoring a resolution which urges congress to provide more funding to fight the Zika Virus.

The virus is a mosquito born infection that can spread through sexual contact with mild symptoms that can often go undetected.

Officials are calling it an international public health crisis with high-risk of infecting an unborn child with congenital and neurological birth defects.

Although earlier this year President Barack Obama requested congress to provide $1.9 billion to prevent, protect and respond to the virus, a large portion of those funds will be exhausted by the end of this month.

A resolution will be introduced in the state senate Tuesday, calling for the U.S. Congress to provide more money to develop a vaccine and to implement mosquito control and prevention efforts for state and local governments.
