New food co-op store opens in Jackson

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) – It’s been a growing trend over the past decade, people opting for organic food that’s grown locally.

However, some communities just don’t have access to fresh healthy food.

But that’s changing in Jackson, where a new food co-op is planting its roots downtown.

6 News was there Monday morning as Justine Melville was excited to fill up her basket with fresh produce.

“We’ve been waiting for something like this to come downtown for a while now. There are no grocery stores in downtown Jackson,” Melville said.

Community Vibrations just opened this past weekend on S. Mechanic Street.

Andrea Ericksen says the food co-op started in her garage.

It has grown over the past year and now needs a storefront.

“It’s bigger than just food. It’s a bigger picture thing, about how we can come together and be a better community,” Ericksen said.

This is not your typical grocery store.

The majority of the food being sold is grown by farmers within 30 miles of Jackson.

At the co-op, customers can get discounts by paying a fee to become a member or volunteering at the store.

“It’s a really great deal for organic food. The idea is that the community is coming together to run it,” Ericksen said.

She says the store also visits farms to make sure they’re growing food organically, and treating animals humanely.

Shoppers like Justine Melville hope this will fill the void of healthy food options for people who live and work downtown.

“There is the farmer’s market that comes in the summer time, but you can’t get it daily. It will be nice that something will be open daily,” Melville said.

The co-op will have its grand opening October 1.

They plan on accepting government food benefits in the coming weeks.
