(CBS) – Three men have discovered a 119-year-old shipwreck at the bottom of Lake Superior.
Jerry Eliason and Ken Merryman of Minnesota and Kraig Smith of Wisconsin spent years looking for the wreck of the schooner Antelope and found the 187 foot ship on September 2, using sonar.
The ship sank near the Apostle Islands in October 1897 while being towed to Ashland, Wisconsin. No one died.
Merryman says it’s very intact, with the mast and riggings still in place. “Very intact. It has the mast still standing, and the rigging is still in place. Yeah, it was an amazing find,” said Merryman.
The men plan to share the location of the wreck with the state of Wisconsin and hope it will eventually be declared a historic site.
