LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Have you ever been curious of how much crime happens near your neighborhood? Well, the Lansing police department has a mapping tool you can use to check it out and it’s all available at your fingertips.

“It’s a good tool for the public, it really is,” said At Large Councilmember Carol Wood.

With the click of your mouse, or a swipe on your smartphone, “CrimeMapping” is giving people in the Lansing community a sense of awareness.

“It’s a free service that we offer our citizens so that they can get timely data and information about crimes that may be occurring in their neighborhood,” Lansing Police Chief Michael Yankowski stated.

Crimemapping.com has been around for the past 4 years. It helps put people’s minds at ease knowing what crimes, if any, are happening nearby.

“You can type in your address, 1, 2, 3 Main Street, Lansing, Michigan…you can find out there’s 17 crimes that are available through the vendor system that we are using that you can get alerts to,” said Yankowski.

Lansing Councilmember Carol Wood uses the crime tracker and says it helps her feel safe about her neighborhood.

“It gives a better perspective of what’s happening in the community that you live in,” Wood stated.

So how does it work?

The tool allows people to track a radius of a few hundred yards around your location.

By typing in an address, a map appears that shows crimes like assault or theft for example and even gives people a contact number if concerned.

“This tool gives people the power of information which then in turn can help the police department keep their community safe,” Yankowski said.
