Comfort dog coming to Jackson County Courthouse

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — Police dogs help take a bite out of crime every day. But a new trend for canines is having them in courthouses for comfort.

You will soon see a four legged friend roaming the halls of the Jackson County Courthouse.

This is all part of an effort to make the building a friendlier place to be.

When kids come to the courthouse, it’s often a difficult time for them.

“They have to about some very terrible events that have happened to them. Such as sexual abuse, bad physical abuse,” said Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney Jerry Jarzynka.

Jarzynka has been doing research for several years and is now ready to unleash a plan to get a canine advocate.

“Anything we can do to help alleviate the stress, it’s a good thing. Canine advocates have shown that they do this,” Jarzynka said.

The office doesn’t have a comfort dog picked out yet.

They just know it will be a Labrador Retriever with a special handler, Jarzynka himself.

“The advocate will come to work with me in the morning and when he gets to the office, I will go to my office, and the advocate will go to his own office. And at the end of the day, he’ll come home with me,” Jarzynka said.

The dog will go through special training to offer maximum furry comfort.

A local veterinarian has already stepped up to provide free health care.

And this pooch will give good vibes to the adults in the building as well.

“We also expect them to boost morale in the staff of the prosecutor’s office. We’re excited about it,” Jarzynka said.

They hope to have the prosecuting pup at work, with its tail wagging, in the next 6 months.
