Suspicious fire leaves neighbors concerned

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Flames spark outside a Lansing home as some neighbors fear a fire-bomb was thrown through the window.

It happened just after midnight on the 2800 block of East Saginaw Street. The homeowner was inside when it happened and police say the fire was out before first responders even arrived.

However, the incident brought a lot of action to a normally quiet street and neighbors still have concerns.

Smoke burns on the driveway and a broken window…it’s damage that could have been much worse after a fire sparked at this home early this morning.

“We just woke up in the middle of the night and we heard a loud glass shattering and of course I just laid there thinking oh something happened outside but my husband went to the window and said oh call 911 there’s a fire next door,” said Neighbor Dawn Blowers.

Blowers lives next door and she says she and her husband were startled to see a fire outside their neighbors home.

“The driveway had two places where it was on fire and you could just smell the gas and it was a very, very strong smell,” Blowers stated.

Today the window is smashed and blackened by smoke…damage that could have been much worse if the homeowners weren’t there to put it out so quickly.

Police say this is a suspicious fire and may have been intentionally set, leaving some neighbors worried about their safety.

“We do like our neighborhood it’s a safe neighborhood but yes we do have a child and so we’re obviously concerned that something like that would go on in our neighborhood,” said Neighbor Erin Bartels.

So while the investigation continues, neighbors say they plan to stay alert.

“You hope that it’s not something that’s just random because then you do feel unsafe because you don’t know…you’re not really safe anywhere,” said Bartels.

Fire investigators are looking into this incident tonight. If they determine it was in fact intentionally set, they will then turn it over to police.
