Most dangerous intersections for crashes in Jackson County revealed

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — Every community has them, dangerous intersections where the numbers show you’re more likely to get into a car wreck.

Michigan Auto Law, a law firm out of the Detroit area, collected data from Michigan State Police and put together a list of intersections in Jackson County that saw the most crashes last year.

While they help customers with their phones, Verizon workers can’t help but notice a high number of car crashes happening outside their store in Jackson.

“You hear it too. It’s usually pretty bad,” said employee Mikayla Bable.

The intersection that their store is located on, Brown Street and Michigan Avenue, ranks 10th on the list of most dangerous intersections in Jackson County.

“Definitely a lot of people texting on their phones when they go through,” said employee Justin Holmes.

“They’re not paying attention when they’re turning out of parking lots or the turn lane,” Bable said.

The employees say drivers make matters worse by cutting through their parking lot to avoid traffic.

“We’ve talked about how we need signs, they fly through here,” Bable said.

The majority of the trouble spots on the list are along West Avenue, and just outside the city of Jackson near I-94 and busy shopping areas.

The intersection of West Avenue, U.S. 127 and I-94 comes in at number one, with 55 crashes reported in 2015.

This is seen as a tricky spot, with 127 suddenly turning into West Avenue, as cars get on and off 94.

“Traffic is pretty heavy through here,” said Daniel Ross, who lives near the intersection on Andrew Avenue.

Ross says his street is becoming increasingly dangerous, with high traffic volumes spilling over into the neighborhood, and cars barreling through past the speed limit.

“I’ve got a couple daughters of my own, and they come out here for the school bus. There are no sidewalks. The road is too narrow for the high traffic area it is,” Ross said.

He says dedicated turn lanes in the area could help relieve traffic.

Advice for decreasing the amount of crashes in Jackson is simple.

“Pay attention. Slow down. Stay off your phones,” Holmes said.
