LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – For young athletes in south Lansing it’s not always easy to find a place to play a “pick-up” game of soccer or pass around a football but a new addition to the community hopes to change that.
Lansing mayor Virg Bernero, along with city park officials, announced today an $813,000 sports facility will be built in Risdale Park.
It will house practice areas for youth football, soccer and other sports.
The facility will include a natural turf playing field.
While ground has not been broken yet Mayor Bernero feels the facility will be key in building a stronger community for youth sports.
“The truth is we have these teams these football teams that have been growing and have been moving from field to field,” said Mayor Bernero. “They have not had a home and now working with our parks and rec department and community development we’re going to finally have a permanent home for these football programs.”
The project is being paid for with money from the city’s Community Development Block Grant.
Construction is expected to be done by next fall.
