More than 100 cats removed from home & undergoing medical testing

PERRY, Mich. (WLNS) – “I found it quite unusual, I’ve never seen that many cats in one location,” Shiawassee County Undersheriff Walter McPherson said.

For twelve hours Wednesday, animal control and police worked to remove more than 100 cats near a home northwest of Perry, Michigan.

“They got there roughly around 8:30 to 9a.m. maybe right around 8:30 and they cleared roughly about 8:00 last night,” said McPherson.

He says around 111 cats were found and sent to the Capital Area Humane Society in Lansing.

“Presently we’re in the process of evaluating each cat medically and it is quite an extensive process,” said President/CEO Julia Willson of the Lansing Capital Area Humane Society.

Willson says situations like this are not rare.

“We deal with these situations more frequently than we like to so I guess for us we’re familiar with dealing with high volume cases involving either hoarding or just cruelty cases,” Willson stated.

Medical testing is the first step that needs to be taken. Officials would not comment on whether any of the cats were ill.

“We have to examine each cat, perform some testing and then get all those results back and get all that information compiled and then off to the prosecutor’s office,” said Willson.

“The next step is for the prosecutor to review all of the evidence that was collected at the scene and they’ll make the determination on what charges need to be brought or if any charges at all,” McPherson stated.

With the large intake of cats, the animal shelter says it will take days before results come in.

“It’s a little overwhelming the process of getting all these cats into our care and providing them with everything that they need,” said Willson.

Overwhelming or not, the humane society wants to move this investigation forward and get the animals the care they deserve.
