An Ionia man died Wednesday, 8 days after a crash that sent him to the hospital.

The crash happened on N. State Rd (M-66) near Elmwood Drive, just north of Ionia.

Dispatchers had been getting reports that a motorcycle in that area was all over the road. A short while later, they say the man drifted off to the right side of the road, hit the curb, and lost control of the 2012 Harley Davidson. Deputies say he was thrown from the motorcycle, but that it landed on top of him. They also say he was not wearing a helmet – and that they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Emergency crews originally took him to Ionia Sparrow Hospital, but he was eventually flown to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids where he died Wednesday morning.
