East Lansing Police prepares for return of MSU students

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Welcome Week is here at Michigan State University.

Many students will get their first taste of independence but the East Lansing Police Department has a few tips for freshmen.

“We realize that kids are coming up to East Lansing and Michigan State University for the first time being away from home”, said Lt. Scott Wriggelsworth.

“Use the buddy system and use common sense.”

Lt. Wriggelsworth says extra boots will be on the ground this weekend and under-age drinking will not be tolerated.

“Not every sworn officer working this weekend on over-time will be in uniform. We’ll have some plain clothes, plain car officers out there looking for those specific violations.”

The East Lansing and Michigan State University Police Departments are joining forces and if the threat of getting locked up doesn’t motivate students to be on their best behavior maybe the ticket fines will.

“Open alcohol ticket can range between $200-$400”, said Lt. Wriggelsworth.

“If you get a nuisance party ticket they can be upwards of 500 to thousand dollars depending on court costs and other things that go into account.”
