ITHACA, Mich (WLNS) – One week from tonight we have high school football openers and our first “5th Quarter” show of the season.
Today is scrimmage day all over the area for a number of local teams.
We continue our 6 Sports Two-A-Days and we went up U.S. 127 for this one.
To the palace on the highway, Ithaca High School stadium and what a powerhouse they have built in the shadow of the water tower in this town.
Ithaca has won five Division 6 state championships in the last six years.
And after a 1-year hiatus from the throne, got it back last year with a perfect 14-and-0 record and Terry Hessbrook might be the coach of the century around here.
The YellowJackets have lost only three games in the last seven years. 3 games in 7 years!
And they open their defense of this state championship next Friday night against Clare.
Reporter: “For a program where the standard is Ford Field or bust since the turn of the decade, how do you keep these kids going, even though we are only in early August?”
Hessbrook: “We just keep challenging them. Each and every day we try and find something new to challenge the kids with each day and so far they’ve been up to the challenge. They’ve accepted that challenge and you know it gets tougher each year, there’s no doubt about that.”
“I think this team’s really enthusiastic about the season. They’re hungry to get in there and get more wins under our belt,” said junior wide receiver Trey Chapin. “I think we just keep up the enthusiasm and get a little bit more aggressive before game week.”
