LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – Our two week, Two-A-Days journey continues and day number 6 takes us to Waverly High School where the Warriors are all fired up about the coming season.
But they have a rough start, opening next week against Lansing Catholic in the game that will inaugurate the Cougars’ new stadium.
Had coach Anthony Walker is in season number four at Waverly.
He has a new quarterback this year in senior Lucas Leak who is moving from tight end.
The Warriors were 6-and-3 in Walker’s first season but then two, three win seasons were followed by a 4-and-5 record last season so there is a mindset at Waverly to get back to the postseason.
And all are optimistic, of course. “We’re coming along, we’re working at it,” said coach Walker. “We’re looking forward to it.”
The coach says the goal now is rebuilding the program and getting back in the playoffs. “Correct, you’re exactly right. We’re trying to build a program. We made it the first year….last couple years have been not what we want it to be but we’re working towards it.”
“We’re very athletic so I like all the athletes we got and we’re returning a lot from last year so I’m looking for a pretty good year from our team,” says quarterback Lucas Leak.
He admits he’s working on his leadership skills. “Yes sir. I’m not as vocal as I should be but I’ve got to work on that.”
