EATON RAPIDS, Mich (WLNS) – Week number two and day number 6 on our 10 day, 20-team 6 Sports prep Two-A-Days trail.
Tonight our journey brings us to Eaton Rapids High School where “Man Mountain” Mike Smith is in charge and I mean he is in charge.
His third year in his second stint at E.R.
Some 20 years ago he was here for one season and led the Greyhounds to the playoffs.
They never went again until he came back three years ago.
31 years as a head coach now for Smith, who spent nearly three decades at Holt before trying college coaching for two years.
He is back in his element.
His Greyhounds fell off the pace to 4-and-5 last year after two straight playoff seasons and “Man Mountain” Mike likes this team in 2016.
“We haven’t had one discipline problem,” says coach Smith. “They work hard at practice and everything they do is, I mean, I’m surprised and then as practices go, you look at your schedule and you’re always squeezed for time. It’s not because you want to get out, you don’t have enough time because we have our whole offense in and it’s Friday. They’re really a good, hard working group and I’m blessed to have ’em.”
“There’s a different type of bond with this team this year,” says senior running back Tristen Schultz. “We all kind of connect with each other and there’s no separate groups where there were before.”
And why is that? “Honestly, not quite sure. We all just get along with each other and we all click. It’s nice.”
