Neighbors react following apparent murder-suicide in Jackson County

NAPOLEON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLNS) – Investigators with the Jackson County Sheriff’s office are searching for answers tonight after a man apparently shot and killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself.

Police were called to a home on the 5500 block of Clark Lake road in Napoleon Township on Friday evening to check on an elderly woman who had not been heard from for several days.

When they got there, officers saw a woman lying on the floor, not moving and a man inside refused to open the door.

Officials say that 62-year-old man was known to have mental health issues and to carry a gun. A stand-off ensued and ended hours later when police entered the home.

Once inside, officers found both the man and woman dead. Officials believe the man shot himself before they entered but say the woman, also shot, had been dead for some time.

As details surrounding this case emerge, 6 News spoke with people who knew the couple involved. They paint a picture of a friendly couple, but a husband and wife known to have both physical and mental health problems.

“I was their family ya know I spent Christmas with them,” said Tonya Jackson, the couple’s former tenant.

Those who knew the couple who lived inside the Napolean Township home say they were overall kind.

“We moved in two weeks after my birthday, she went and got me something,” Jackson stated.

However Jackson says there was a dark side when it came to struggles with mental illness.

“Honestly, I had to call the cops on him. He was off his medicine. I told Napolean Township that he had a weapon inside,” Jackson stated.

April Buckles lives next door and watched first hand on Friday as the events unfolded.

“When I came home it was surrounded by police,” Buckles said.

She too tells a story of a nice couple struggling with not only mental but physical health issues as well.

“She was older and he had told me a few months ago that she had some terminal health problems and so I know that they were dealing with that,” Buckles stated.

And while investigators continue to piece together exactly what happened to the couple inside this home and why, those who knew them are left to mourn a double loss.

“It’s a bad situation here, but they are good people…they was good people,” said Jackson.

Neighbors also say the couple also had two nice dogs. There was concern over what happened to them but officials tell 6 news they are safe and were taken to the county animal shelter.
