GRAND LEDGE, Mich (WLNS) – For stop number 10 on our 6 Sports Two-A-Days run we went out to Grand Ledge High School where the Comets may be one of the very best teams in the mid-Michigan area.
As is often the case under coach Matt Bird he has taken this program that was already so strong and elevated it to new heights.
The Comets are coming off a superb 12 and 1 season, the third one-loss season in the last eight years.
They don’t rebuild at Grand Ledge; they just reload.
And by all accounts the Comets are loaded again this season and looking for big things.
“It’s special for us to get that unique situation and then it’s also unique here that our kids with our youth program get to stay together as long as they do so that experience Definitely plays into it,” says Bird. “The tough part for a coach when you have you know the 32 that are coming back. What you have is the kids that you have to find a role and you have to really define that role and then you have to make sure that they understand that it’s incredibly important that they do their role to the best of their ability so that’s been fun because you really get to know their personalities too.”
Senior tight end Jake Lalumia knows there is pressure but also work to do. “I’d say there’s a lot of pressure but we’re also having a lot of fun with it because it is our last season. We’re going to come out here and work hard and work for what we can get.”
