Child dies of injuries from I-96 crash

INGHAM CO., Mich – One of the children critically injured in a multi-vehicle accident Wednesday on I-96 has died.

The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office tells 6 News that the 17-month-old Detroit area boy died last night in a local hospital. A five-year-old child is still in critical condition. Six other people were also injured in the crash.

Investigators say the crash began when the driver of a semi-truck slammed into 5 vehicles when traffic slowed for an earlier accident.

The crash happened at 4:30 p.m. prompting multiple ambulances to rush to the westbound lanes of I-96 near the Okemos road rest area. The highway was closed for five hours while investigators were on the scene.

No charges have been filed against any of the drivers.
