LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – Former state senator Gretchen Whitmer will be sworn into office as the new Ingham County Prosecutor Tuesday. She will officially take office on July 2.
Whitmer was appointed to fill the remainder of the term when current Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III officials resigns July 2. The 63-yeaer-old Dunnings is charged with hiring prostitutes hundreds of times and paying for sex with a woman who wanted help in a child custody dispute.
He has been taking a medical leave of absence until July 2. He has not provided details in the resignation letter about medical issues.
Dunnings had been the elected Democratic prosecutor for nearly 20 years.
“Our justice system only works when the people have faith in its integrity and my first priority in office is to ensure we are building the foundation for that to exist in the Prosecutor’s Office again,” said Whitmer.
Whitmer has been meeting with the attorneys and staff in the Prosecutor’s Office leading up to the swearing-in and taking office.
