Jackson County Sheriff’s Marine Division keeping boaters safe

PLEASANT LAKE, Mich. (WLNS) – The water is cool on pleasant lake, and this hot father’s day, many are out enjoying it.

Zach Comstock says he and his family are out here every weekend.

“Come out, just enjoy the water, swim. Kids love it out here,” Comstock said.

And while he preps his pontoon, the Marine Division of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is making sure boaters are following the rules.

“Just a reminder once you get close to that swim area, just make sure that you get down a little bit slower, slow no wake speed,” Deputy Ben Roe said.

It’s friendly reminders for some, while others actually need some help.

“Do you have a knife?”
“A knife?”
“Yeah, a coolant line popped and we got to cut it.”

But Deputy Ben Roe says they’re on the water mainly to educate boaters.

“The decal needs to be three inches beyond this on the right hand side.”
“Is there like a rule book?”
“Yup, Just handed it to him.”

“People come out here on the water and if they don’t have very much experience, they try to wing it and so when we come across somebody like that last boat that we had, providing them one of those boating education handbooks does a lot,” Roe said.

Roe says while they do hand out some citations, their main goal is to make sure boaters are aware of and operate within the rules so everyone stays safe.
