New Michigan State Park getting positive reviews in Jackson County

NORVELL TWP., (WLNS) – How many of our state parks have you been to? Well, there’s at least one you’ll still need to check off your list.  The new park is in Jackson County’s Norvell Township. It’s going to be called the Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve.

The land was purchased by the State of Michigan to become a new state park. Michigan’s 103rd. But, how do neighbors feel about it?

“I’m kind of all for it because I’d like to see that land be turned into something people could use and it’s always been farmed you know. It’s not being farmed anymore. Couple nice lakes on it. And, I like to go down there and go fishin’…me and everyone else. So, I think it’s going to be a pretty good deal as long as they keep up and manage it,” said Norvell Township Resident John Senkewitz.

The State of Michigan spent just under $3 million for the new park. With 717 acres it is being combined with an area in Washtenaw County.  Officials say you’ll be able to hike, bird watch, and go mountain biking.

Public meetings will be held in the future to discuss how to manage this new state park.
