Islamic Society of Greater Jackson vigil for Orlando victims

JACKSON, MI (WLNS) – It’s been five days since 49 people were gunned-down and killed in Orlando, Florida. But, in Mid-Michigan today, many remembered and honored the victims.

You wouldn’t notice from the outside of the house, but it’s home to the Islamic Center of Greater Jackson. Inside, worshippers decided it was time to honor the victims of the deadly Orlando mass shooting.

“There are no words to describe the sickening feeling that you and I have discussed many times since Sunday,” said Islamic Society of Greater Jackson Spokesperson Alexander Bashir to the dozens in attendance.

Addressing dozens of people Alexander Bashir made it clear, the Islamic faith is not about killing others.

“You and I know that his acts were acts of delusional murder. We know that our faith stands for peace. We know that our faith stands for harmony,” continued Bashir.

They denounce radical groups and terrorism. And, they want people to realize that.

Jackson resident Hassan Ahmad said, “it was a really good chance for the people of Jackson, especially the Muslim community, to make the necessary distinction between mainstream Islam and radical Islam. That is what happened in Florida [was radical Islam].”

“Not enough people understand that Islam is not terrorism. They generalize based off of what a group of people say and they don’t understand that one small group doesn’t represent 1.6 billion people,” said Jackson resident Emmah Bashir.

Yet, they know more work needs to be done to heal the wounds made by terrorists.

Long-time Jackson pediatrician and Islamic Society of Greater Jackson President Dr. Naseer Humayun said, “the willingness of our community to work with the American community at large will bring us all together.”

The Islamic Society of Greater Jackson has been in the city since 1998. They tell us, their doors are always open.
