Bill passed to compensate the wrongfully convicted

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – One bill that approved unanimously by the senate is not designed to save taxpayer money but to compensate those who were wrongly imprisoned.

Under that bill someone who is proven innocent after being sent to prison would be paid $50,000 for every year they spent locked up.

Michigan is fifth in the nation for releasing prisoners who were wrongfully convicted.

That bill is also headed to the state house.
