National Doughnut Day began in 1938 by The Salvation Army to honor the group’s “Doughnut Lassies” who served doughnuts during World War I. During the war there were 250 Salvation Army volunteers who served doughnuts to American troops in France.

The doughnut now serves as a symbol of all the social services The Salvation Army provides to those in need. The Salvation Army still serves doughnuts, in addition to warm, healthy meals and hydration, to people in need.
