Holiday numbers to start your weekend conversations

LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer and regardless of the weather thousands of people will plan bar-b-q’s, pool time and parades this weekend.

A lot of people started their Memorial Day weekend a little early.

89-percent of travelers are expected to get to their destination by car. Could it be the lower gas prices from last year?

But let’s not forget those who fought and died for the red, white, and blue.

The website Wallethub.com did a study of the important numbers that are associated with Memorial Day.

Let’s start with the military. They found that an estimated 42-million Americans over the years have served our country during war time.

Of those, 1.3 million members of the armed services have lost their lives in conflict.

And to honor those brave men and women more than 900,000 participants and spectators are expected to visit the nation’s Capital during Rolling Thunder, the annual Memorial Day motorcycle rally in Washington D.C.

Wallethub also found out that more than 25-percent more home-cooking fires happen on Memorial Day than average.

But the craziest statistic out there is this: 818 hotdogs are consumed every second from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Again, 818 hotdogs every second. Until Labor Day in early September.

To put that last number in perspective it probably took you about 50 seconds to read this story.

That means almost 50,000 hotdogs would have been eaten since you started reading… wow!

Happy Memorial Day everyone.
