(WLNS) – With one crack of the bat last Friday, Lakewood junior Sierra Stoepker put and end to an incredible game, sealing the Vikings first Softball Classic title after 14 innings against DeWitt.
“Oh I knew we could compete” said Coach Steve Spetoskey (in his first year coaching varsity at Lakewood) “As soon as Sierra hit it, it was a no doubter in my mind, I heard it, it was the right sound, and by the time it got over to the pitcher, I saw the velocity, and I knew it was gone.
“I actually didn’t swing all the way through” recalled Stoepker of her swing. “When I hit it, I knew it felt like a good hit, I did not realize it was going to go out, but when I rounded first and I saw everyone cheering I was like, we won!”
After Friday night’s epic finish, the Vikings had to turn around and play three more games at Lakewood in a tournament they hosted on Saturday. They won all three of those as well, making it an astonishing eight wins in five days for the Vikes.
“(last week) definitely up there with one of the best weeks” said junior Pitcher Kennedy Geiger, who threw all 59 innings during the eight game win streak. “Coach just tells us to come out here and turn life off and just focus on softball and once we get out here we just, that’s what we do, we just practice, and forget everything else that goes on.” she added.
With a share of the GLAC title already clinched, the Vikings now prepare for the start of districts a week from Saturday (June 4th) but until then, they are preparing together as a close knit unit
“They know how important chemistry is,” said Spetosky of his squad. “If it’s not there, we’re not gonna succeed, and that’s another thing that we’ve tried to sell them and they’re buying into it.”
Congratulations to the Lakewood Vikings softball team, our 6 Sports Team of the Week.
