FLINT, MI (WLNS) – The situation in Flint has created Michigan’s newest political odd couple turning former enemies into the best of friends.
6 News Capitol Correspondent Tim Skubick has the details on this new relationship between republican Bill Schuette and his former democratic opponent and Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton.
Six years ago when Democrat David Leyton tried to unseat Republican Attorney General Bill Schuette, it was an ugly confrontation.
But last week what a different scene in the midst of the Flint water crisis investigation, there was the Genesee County Prosecutor, the Democrat standing next to his former opponent, Bill Schuette
“He’s a friend of mine, can’t think of a prosecutor in the United States of America who does a better job than David Leyton,” said Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette (R).
“I’m working shoulder to shoulder with the attorney general…Attorney General Schuette, I look forward to our continued cooperation,” said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton (D).
Michigan’s new political odd couple has set aside their political differences to the point where Democrat Mr. Leyton believes Mr. Schuette deserves high grades even calling him “a terrific attorney general.”
“We’ve been great partners on the criminal justice issues. He’s been a terrific attorney general for me as a prosecutor and for all my colleagues in the association obviously,” said Leyton.
Reporter: “This is from a guy who ran against him and sat across from the table and tried to eat him alive, a terrific attorney general you just called him.”
“I believe in good government and I believe that when you can work across party lines together, it’s in the best interest of the public,” said Leyton.
However, Mr. Leyton concedes on several social issues, including gay marriage, he and his former Republican opponent and now current friend do not see eye to eye, but Mr. Leyton brushes that aside, as well.
“There are certain social issues that we probably don’t see eye to eye on, but that’s okay. On the issues where I have to work with him on, things are going great,” said Leyton.
What a difference six years can make from political enemies to political friends.
