Multiple Heroin overdoses over the weekend show how addicting drug is

JACKSON, MI (WLNS) – Heroin…it seems like almost every week we’re telling you about people overdosing on it in Jackson. This weekend was no different. But, thanks to the work of police officers, two people were brought back from the brink of death.

Jackson Police officers responded to several overdoses over the weekend. It’s becoming commonplace for police officers to save the lives of those who overdose.

Jackson Police Department Deputy Chief Elmer Hitt said, “in some of these OD’s, we’ve had teens, 20’s…we’ve had 50, 60 year old Heroin addicts who have overdosed. Same with across races. We’re not seeing African Americans or White people being the primary user. It’s a broad picture when you look at it.”

Jackson Police found two people unresponsive but were revived using Narcan while a third victim passed away on Sunday. Narcan is a medication used to block the effects of Opioids. Jackson Deputy Chief Elmer Hitt says some victims are being administered Narcan multiple times. It’s a big enough issue that Representative Tim Walberg wants to see change.

“They’re looking at it from a broader perspective that ‘how in the world do we deal with this problem of pain over medication,'” said Walberg.

But, there is hope right in Jackson’s backyard to recover from the addictive drug.

Jackson Recovery Resource Center Program Manager Shannon Jackson said, “Jackson Recovery Resource Center is a meet the client where the client is at from an active addiction through a recovery and maintaining that recovery.”

Police are awaiting toxicology reports to determine if the woman who died over the weekend overdosed on Heroin.
