LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – It was a star-studded affair at the 2nd Annual Lansing Promise fundraiser at the Lansing Center.
“This is for the kids. We’ve done our job. I want to thank you all for coming out,” said Earvin Magic Johnson.
Lansing native, Earvin Magic Johnson was a special guest at Thursday’s event.
MSU Basketball Coach Tom Izzo and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero were also in attendance.
They were among the many local leaders who came out to support the Lansing Promise.
And to top it off, a special performance by Earth, Wind and Fire.
Thursday night’s fundraiser was highlighted with words from Lansing School District students who have benefited from the scholarship program.
Including scholarship recipient Desjarae Miller.
“The scholarship means to me the world–it has helped me build on my career and find connections,” said Miller.
Tonight’s fundraiser was also an opportunity for scholar applicant’s to see just how much the community stands behind the success of its students.
“The Lansing School District and the Lansing community cares so much for all of its students that it gives all of us this wonderful opportunity. It just makes me really proud to be a student in the Lansing schools,” said scholarship applicant Alejandro Salais.
Supporters say investing in students’ educational futures, through the Lansing Promise, will have a positive influence on many aspects within the Lansing community.
“Without the success of the Lansing School District, this city, this community will truly not succeed. Tonight is like another step in a very long journey of being the great district we know we have,” said Peter Spadafore, with the Lansing Board of Education.
