(WLNS) – A new CBS News poll has found that more than half of the people surveyed feel that marijuana should be legalized.

The poll, released today, shows that 56 percent of the responders approve of legalization. That number is up three percent from last April and the highest percentage recorded so far in the CBS News polls.

36 percent were against legalizing marijuana, a drop of about seven percent from last year. Seven percent didn’t know or had no answer.

When asked if they had tried marijuana again more than half, 51 percent, said they had. That’s up from 43 percent last year and 34 percent in 1997.

The poll also asked if a candidate for president used marijuana in the past, would that make the responder more likely to vote for the candidate, less likely or wouldn’t matter. Six percent answered they would be more likely to vote for that candidate, 12 percent said less likely and 80 percent said it wouldn’t matter.

People were also asked if marijuana or alcohol was more dangerous to a person’s health. 52 percent said alcohol was more harmful, an increase of just one percent from last year. Nine percent answered that marijuana was more dangerous, a drop from 12 percent last year. 27 percent responded by saying they were equally as harmful to a person’s health, a decline of one percent.

Medical marijuana is legal in Michigan and the rapid growth of dispensaries has led Lansing mayor Virg Bernero to call for a moratorium on new medical marijuana dispensaries.
